U.S. Department of Defense
The U.S. Department of Defense has the responsibility of overseeing government functions directly related to the national security of the United States, including managing the United States Armed Forces’ 2.15 million service members and 700,000+ civilians. U.S. Army
The U.S. Army is the land-based branch of the U.S. Armed Forces and is tasked with preserving the peace and security of, and defending, the United States, Commonwealths and occupied areas. The Army has several hundred thousand active duty personnel, and has deployed all over the world in major conflicts since America’s founding.
U.S. Navy
The U.S. Navy is the largest and most capable Navy in the world, and it includes several hundred thousand service members. The Navy contains seven fleets and hundreds of battle force ships. While the Navy is known for its prowess on the water, the Navy also provides significant capabilities in the air, as well. It contains the world’s largest aircraft carrier fleet, and carriers can carry and launch fixed-wing aircraft.
U.S. Marine Corps
The Marine Corps operates under the Department of the Navy, and it’s one of the most elite fighting forces in the world. The Marine Corps has been America’s expeditionary force in readiness since 1775. Marines are “forward deployed to win our nation’s battles swiftly and aggressively in times of crisis. We fight on land, sea and air, as well as provide forces and detachments to naval ships and ground operations.”
U.S. Air Force
The U.S. Air Force is the largest, most technologically advanced in the world. The Air Force has an extensive list of aircraft, including B-2 Bombers, F-22 Raptors, F-35 Lightning IIs, F-16 Fighting Falcons and A-10 Thunderbolt IIs. The Air Force is comprised of several hundred thousand service members.
U.S. Coast Guard
The Coast Guard was founded in 1790, making it the oldest continuing seagoing service, and is America’s maritime first responder. The Coast Guard operates under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security during peacetime but can be transferred to operate under the U.S. Department of the Navy. There are thousands of service members in the Coast Guard, and the service has hundreds of coast and ocean-going patrol ships, including tenders, tugs and “Cutters” – and more than 1,500 smaller boats. In addition, the Coast Guard has hundreds of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. The Coast Guard is the world’s 12th largest naval force.
U.S. Department of Homeland Security
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is charged with keeping the American homeland safe. It utilizes “240,000 employees in jobs that range from aviation and border security to emergency response, from cybersecurity analyst to chemical facility inspector.” Missions include preventing terrorism and enhancing security, managing U.S. borders, administering immigration laws, securing cyberspace and ensuring disaster resilience.
U.S. Department of Justice
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), or Justice Department, is the department of the government responsible for enforcing the law and administering justice. It was founded in 1870.
American Culture
American culture is centered around the core concept of individual liberty, free from government oppression. There are a handful of values and tenets of American culture that are generally accepted by all. Americans believe in independence from government oppression and tyranny, and the concept of individualism and equality. The cultural theme of freedom, especially the First and Second Amendments of the U.S. Constitution that protect free speech, and the ownership of firearms to protect the First Amendment, are embedded in the cultural fabric of the United States.
